Choosing The Right Games For Dementia Patients

By Kathrine Franks

As a caregiver for patients with Alzheimer's and dementia. You understand that getting them involved in stimulating activities is very important. Their brains need to be stimulated all the time. This way, their state of forgetfulness is not going to end up escalating. You do need to know what things have to be done to ensure that you do not only care for them right, but you help them through useful activities too.

It is reassuring to know that there are games that you can let your patients take part of that might help make it easier for them to combat the spread of the condition. There are very interesting games for dementia patients that you can let them take part of whenever they have the time to spare. Making sure that you get he right games introduced for such a purpose though ensures that you can maximize their benefits.

Caregivers need to remember that before they can really look after for these people, they have to get a good understanding of their nature, they need to know what the condition is about and how it affects them. Then, at the end of the day, they can trust that they will be able to address their needs very well. After all, they are very much aware of what these people require in the first place.

They need to be playing somewhere that is right and ideal for the activities that you want them to engage in too. You need to be sure that they are going to be at ease so they will be more interested in the game. Making sure that this is the place that you will allow them to play at every time would ensure that they will have a routine that they will regularly follow.

Remember that the pastimes that you will let these patients have to be designed in such a way that will help brain stimulation. Remember that they need to be simple enough in order for them to understand how it is done in their current state. However, it is not good for you to degrade them in such a way where you are letting do something that kids do. The key is simple enough, yet appropriate for adults.

Puzzles are really good exercises too. They are fun. They can be quite stimulating to the brain as well. If you think that you need something that would be easy enough for the patient to understand, but will keep him occupied as well, then these games may be the right choice for you. Crosswords or word finding games might be good for such a purpose as well.

Scarp booking and collecting photos can be fun too. They allow patients to look into old photographs that they may still recognize themselves. Aside from allowing them to discuss about the activity and the pictures that the are seeing, this activity might help make it easier for them to recall events and even people in their lives whom they are having a hard time recalling now.

One can choose to get them to engage in reading activities. Book are always very good choices due to the fact that they tell stories. They make it easier for the patient to say something about what they have read it could be a discussion with the actual caregiver or a discussion with fellow patient too. Either way, it is interesting and it encourages interaction and even recollection to some people.
