A Different Perspective On Fear

By Evan Sanders

Fear. It grips us. It can literally paralyze us completely and make us freeze in a second. Anyone that tells you that fear isn't really a component in their life is either lying or they aren't really pushing the envelope remotely. Fear, for those who are really alive, presents itself daily. Naturally this is tough to deal with at certain times but we do have the option to make choices in the face of fear. That moment, the second we choose to move forward in spite of what is really challenging us, is an amazing demonstration of courage and bravery.

How can you begin to work with fear rather than run from it, cast it away, or try to block it out completely?

We must work with our emotions instead of hiding from them.

Possibly that's simpler to say than to do, but in time you become even more skilled in working with your emotions instead of avoiding them absolutely.

Experientially avoiding your natural emotions is an absolute prison cell and you may do more damage than good in participating in it. What ends up taking place? Possibly one of the worst situations you can personally get yourself into - you become numb. I believe we have all been there every now and then and stayed in some place where we can't feel anything. This is not the worst thing in the world, but the things that people do after they're numb are really threatening.

We start going down the path of compromising on our deepest foundations simply to feel again, and with a never-ending list of things that serve as great temptaitons in this life, things can truly start to get pretty messsy.

I've been there, I've seen lots of other people go there, and unfortunately it's something that's going to continue on until you try a change in your point of view about how you handle fear.

When you try and cage the wild pony of fear up, it will make efforts to tear everything apart it can.

But if you let that fear out and permit it to buck and play in the pasture, at last it will tire itself out and calm down to something much more manageable. Don't restrain under fear. Instead, attempt to soften as much as possible. Breathe. Relax. Watch fear dance around you and let it do what it has to do.

If this can be done, you will put yourself in a way more powerful place to make a decision beyond fear rather than being stuck in it.
